Master Derrick Wright

Master Derrick Wright is a closed door student/disciple of Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing, of the International Seven Star Style Lee Kam Wing Martial Arts Association.

He has more than 28 years of experience in the martial arts, and has been teaching for more than 20 years. His training in Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu started with Master John Cheng of California Martial Arts. He became a certified instructor in Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu by Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing in 2004 and was recognized and internationally ranked with the World Wushu Kung Fu Federation in Vancouver, Canada in the same year.

In 2005, Master Wright earned the title of "Master" from the US Kung fu Exchange Federation and became the first student of Master Chengs' to receive the title. As a member, and affiliate school of the US Kung Fu Exchange, Master Wright served as the organization's president, and board member from 2005-2009.

Master Wright first became a martial arts instructor 1997 under the instruction of Master Kenneth Edwards of the Shan Tung Kung Fu Association in Pasadena, CA where he learned Wah Lum Praying Mantis Kung Fu and other Chinese martial art styles.

While serving in the Marine Corps as a military policemen at Camp Futenma in Okinawa, Japan in 1989, Master Wright's martial arts instruction started in Yang Tai Chi Chuan, and Hsing Yi under Master Hokama. He also received instruction from his older classmate, Master Norman Burland who taught him aspects of Southern Dragon.

Master Wright has had the opportunity, and privilege to also train with and attend seminars and workshops held by masters such as; Henry Chung of Midland, MI, Raymond Fogg of Dallas, Texas, Carl Albright of New York, Brandon Jones of Tyler, Texas, Jeff Hughes of Austin, Texas, and the late Richard Feagin of Killeen, Texas.

Master Derrick Wright participated in the "bai si" ceremony at Grand-master Lee Kam Wing's 40 year anniversary in Hong Kong in October 2012. He earned the rank of 8th Dan from Grand-master Lee Kam Wing of the International Seven Star Mantis Style Lee Kam Martial Arts Association on September 2, 2017 at his 20 Year Anniversary in Los Angeles, CA. Master Wright , his students, family, and friends celebrated 20 years teaching and propagating the Seven Star Mantis Style. Master Wright is a Chairman of the World of Seven Star Mantis Style Federation, Vice Chairman of the Southern and Northern Martial Art Association, Overseas Founding Member of the Global Martial Artists Association, and the Chairman of the Board and founding board member of the Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Federation.

Master Derrick Wright is also an alumni of the University of Southern California Suzanne-Peck Dworak Graduate School of Social Work. He is registered with the State of Missouri State Committee of Social Workers as a Licensed Master Social Worker, and with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Clinical Social Worker. Although he believes all social issues are important, his primarily interest are with social change and innovation, and providing services, support and resources to military veterans and families.
