T'ai chi ch'uan is typically practiced for a number of varying reasons: health, martial art skills, aesthetics, meditation, or as a competition sport. Therefore, the practice and type of training usually emphasize different characteristics during training.

The Chen Style is the oldest form of the five traditional t’ai chi ch’uan styles. Chen-style is characterized by Silk reeling, alternating fast & slow motions with bursts power or fajin. Compared to other forms of taiji, some argue that Chen Taji emphasizes martial efficacy.
